St. Andrews Episcopal Church invites you to attend its annual Blue Christmas celebration. The joyousness of the Christmas Season blared from all the media, talk of getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they may of lost or in some cases never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of a loss of job, ill health, the pain of isolation, loss of a family member, loss of a spouse to share with, the loss of a dear pet—all this and more can be part of feeling alone, of “feeling blue” in the midst of the society around us which appears to us bent on “being happy” and “celebrating”. There are years when we hurt at Christmas time and just can’t get into the prescribed festivities. It’s at such times that we need to make the space and take the time to acknowledge our sadness and concern. We need to know we are not alone. So come to a brief service on Sunday December 20th at 4pm at St. Andrews to join in and listen to prayers, and scripture that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who are experiencing struggles. God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness regardless of where we are at, and we can lay our burdens before our savior and mediator at the time of year we celebrate His birth. Please accept this invitation to be with us, hopefully a time to experience the hope that is Christmas. The annual St.Andrew Toy Drive is scheduled for December 6th. It's not too early to start your toy shopping. Please watch for volunteer sign ups.  

St. Andrew's annual Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held on November 26th at 7:00pm.   

Rev.Jane will be preaching at a joint Eccumenical Thanksgiving Service at St.Gilberts Church in Grayslake, at 4:00pm on November 23rd. All are welcome to attend. 

Join us November 15th for a St.Andrews Fall Clean-Up Day. Bring the whole family. Pizza lunch will be provided.     

Grown-ups join us for our next Social Gathering at Rev. Jane and Mike's condo. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share.    

Join the fun and come to the first St. Andrew's movie night. Bring the whole family and enjoy popcorn and a family friendly movie, Friday evening October 17th at 7:00pm.  

In conjunction with St. Francis of Assisi Day, October 4th at 10:00am. Bring your pets and have them blessed. Invite your friends and neighbors to bring their pets too. 

Join St. Andrew's Rector, Rev. Jane Clark, for two Saturday afternoons this fall, October 4th and the 18th from 2:00-4:30 pm for an introduction to the Episcopal Faith. What do we believe as Episcopalians? Explore the liturgy, sacraments and the Nicene Creed and experience an instructed Eucharist. Please sign up or register by calling the Church @ 847-223-2310. The first "Social Gathering" (replaces Kid's Free Night) of the year will be held at the Vine in downtown Grayslake on October 4th. The Social Gathering is for all grown-ups of St. Andrews on Saturday nights starting at 7:00pm. Please let mother Jane know if you would like to host a St. Andrew Social Gathering at your home. Guests bring an appetizer or desert and the hosts provide a beverage.    

Invitations to the newcomer's brunch will be out by early September. All people who have started coming to St. Andrews in the last few months are invited. So bring your questions and family and join us. See mother Jane for address sheet.  

September 21st is Homecoming Sunday. Adults will study the gospel of John. Youth (Sunday School) will meet and greet on the 21st and Sunday school will begin on the 28th.   

Come join the fun! St. Andrew's parish and it's neighbors will party from 3pm to 8pm on Saturday September 20th. Plan to enjoy music, food for purchase by Sammie's and a bouncy house for the kids. Food combo tickets will be available for purchase a coule weeks prior to the event.   

Come join a discussion of a book per month relevant to our Christian journey. Restarting Monday September 15th at 7:00pm for an organizational meeting. So please speak to Rev. Jane if your are interested and let her know what days of the week work for you.    

Prayer is a powerful experience. Come explore on September 13th 1:30-4:30pm healing prayer. Jesus provided us with many examples and the commission to pray for one another. Come learn some of the history and suggested formats for healing prayer. Please sign up or speak to Rev. Jane if you are interested.

Please join us for our Lenten Retreat: Walking the Way of the Cross with Mary. So often we think of Mary with her new born son and neglect to think about the mother of the man who is crucified. Join us at 9:45 am for coffee and donuts and then we will start at 10am to reflect on Mary as she follows her son through his passion and death. Only parents are allowed in the "Toy Store" with a personal shopper. Children will stay in the church and watch videos.

Toy donations are gladly accepted, including games for all ages, sports equipment, dolls and accessories, trucks and cars, craft kits, etc. If you would like to join the fun as a helper, we would love to have you.

An abbreviated Service of Lessons and Carols will be presented during the 10:00 am service on Sunday, December 23. The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols took place on Christmas Eve, 1918, at King's College in Cambridge England. After being appointed Dean of King's college at the age of 34, Eric Milner-White planned the service. His experience as an army chaplain had convinced him that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship. The Order of Service was revised in 1919, which included a rearrangement of the lessons. From that date, the service has always begun with the hymn 'Once in royal David's city'.

There has been a radio broadcast of the service annually since 1928 (with the exception of 1930), even during the Second World War, when the ancient glass (and also all heat) had been removed from the Chapel and the name of King's College could not be broadcast for security reasons. The BBC began broadcasting the service on its overseas service sometime in the 1930s. Since 1963 a shorter service has been filmed periodically for television.

As Dean Milner-White pointed out, ‘The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God ...’ seen ‘through the windows and words of the Bible’. Local interests appear, as they do here, in the bidding prayer, and personal circumstances give point to different parts of the service. Many of those who took part in the first service must have recalled those killed in World War I when it came to the famous passage ‘all those who rejoice with us but on another shore and in a greater light’.

Please join us for our Lenten Series entitled, "Supper, Cross, and Empty Tomb: The Liturgies of Holy Week", by the Rev. Dr. Ruth Meyers. A Lenten Discipline Supper of soup, salad and bread will be served at 6 pm, followed by Evening Prayer and Lecture at 7 pm.

Holy Week is the center of the Christian year. Worship during that week, rich with story and symbolic action, has its origins in the earliest centuries of the church's history. During these four Lenten programs, we will explore each of the principal liturgies in the Book of Common Prayer: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil.

Please join us, and prepare to celebrate these services this year by learning about their meaning and the ways they connect us to Christ and to Christians from ages past.

Our Parish Annual Meeting and Pot Luck will take place following the 10:00 am service on Sunday, January 21. All ministry and activity leaders should have their reports in to Mother Jane this week. Please sign up to bring food for the pot luck.

St. Andrew's Book Club will move from the 3rd Thursday back to the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Please join us this Wednesday for our January meeting. All are welcome!
