Spiritual and Educational Opportunities for Lent

Thank you to all who attended the Annual Meeting on January 29th—we have a lot of opportunities and, for the first time for a couple of years, are going in with a balanced budget. Thank you to Denise Sawyer and all the volunteers who provided food and help. This year’s Vestry Retreat will be February 17th and 18th and includes the February Vestry meeting. It provides a time for the Vestry to get to know one another and do some strategic planning.

There are several spiritual and educational opportunities for Lent in 2017. Ash Wednesday is March 1st and Easter April 16th this year. Currently on the Hall table are the “Forward Day by Day” booklets for the three months (Feb-April) that include Lent and the first few weeks of the Easter season. I will offer Evening Prayer alternating with Stations of the Cross at 6:30pm every Wednesday in Lent starting March 8th. This will be followed 7:00pm–8:15pm by a 6-part Lenten series 24 Hours that Changed the World by Adam Hamilton (who narrated our Advent series)—a DVD and book discussion. There will be a special Lenten “retreat” on Saturday, April 1st for both adults and youth, What Wondrous Love: Holy Week in Word and Art a DVD presentation and discussion from 2:00pm–4:00pm.

Ash Wednesday will kick off Lent on March 1st with three services and ashes: 7:00am, noon, and 7:00pm. Holy Week starts off with Palm Sunday on April 9th and includes the Wednesday 6:30pm Stations with Lenten series to follow, Maundy Thursday service at 7:00pm, two Good Friday services at noon and 7:00pm. Good Friday Stations has a new time at 1:00pm this year. Easter Vigil on Saturday at 7:00pm (no 5:00pm that Saturday). Easter services April 16th at 8:00am and 10:00am with Egg Hunt for the kids after the 10:00am service. Please look for a “Save the Date” for Lenten and other program opportunities on the website and in the Saltire.

In Lent I have been asked to repeat my instructed Eucharist which includes a short part of an instructed Eucharist that all will receive inside the regular service times. In Sunday School for Adults (Sundays 9:00am–9:45am, March 5–April 9th) I will present a special 6-part series on the Final Words of Jesus on the Cross. Anyone interested in joining this group please just come.

I want to encourage all of you to attend and help with the annual Italian Feast and Silent Auction March 18th and bring your friends. Tickets and sign ups and more info will be available in the coming weeks. This is St. Andrew’s big fundraiser for the year and we value your participation. We are looking for Silent Auction items so let us know if you can help in any way.

Congratulations to Barb Laycock for receiving the St. Andrew Award at our annual Parish meeting! Barb was recognized for her many years of service as our “flower lady” who purchases and arranges the altar flowers throughout the year. Thank you Barb!

Stay warm and safe. God bless you. Rev. Jane+
