March 1 begins Lent with Ash Wednesday services at 7:00am, noon, and 7:00pm. I invite you into a Holy Lent this season and encourage you to add a spiritual discipline to your schedule. With that in mind there are several opportunities at church for you. Remember the Forward Day by Day booklets are available and we also ordered Lenten Meditations—Daily meditations put out by Episcopal Relief and Development. These are great for a brief scripture reading and meditation time for each day.
Other spiritual opportunities are offered in March and April here at St. Andrew. During Lent every Wednesday night starting March 8 we offer 6:30pm Evening Prayer alternating weekly with 6:30 pm Stations of the Cross. These are followed from 7:00–8:15pm by a six-week Wednesday evening series 24 Hours that Changed the World that follows the last full day of Christ’s life.
In all the weekend services the first four weeks of Lent we will review the components of the Eucharist in a four-part short presentation: Instructed Eucharist. On Saturday, April 1 there will be a Lenten mini retreat for adults & youth from 2:00–4:00pm with DVD and discussion, What Wondrous Love: Holy Week in Word and Art.
Everyone is invited to Vestry Coffee hours after each service on the weekend of March 4 and 5th. We got good feedback that we should do this periodically when we initiated this practice on Homecoming Weekend last September. At the Vestry Retreat we scheduled this weekend, so please join us.
Starting on March 12th, consider joining the adult Sunday school between the two Sunday services for the next five weeks as we do a special session of Christ’s “Final Words from the Cross,” In 2017 we will celebrate our 110th anniversary of St. Andrew Parish. With that celebration, the Bishop will make his visit October 21 at the 5:00pm service, with dinner to follow.
Every other year I offer classes for Confirmation/Reception into the Episcopal church to coincide with our year of Bishop visitation. These are held in Lent and, with the Bishop coming later this year, the last session will be held in October. Classes will be held 2:00–5:00pm on Sundays, March 12, 26, April 2 and 9, with a makeup if needed to be scheduled in May. The final class will be held October 15, for review and preparation for the liturgy and Bishop’s visit.
I also want to encourage all of you to attend the annual Italian Feast March 18th and bring your friends. Turn your money and unused tickets in as soon as possible to the office and sign up to bring a desert and to help the day of the event. This is the major fundraiser for the year so it is important that we all support it. This year promises to have some very special Silent Auction items and we always have great food.
May this Lenten season be a time of peace and reflection for each of you. Please see in the newsletter and on the website calendar a list of upcoming events and Holy Week services. If you have any compliments, suggestions, or concerns, please let me or your Vestry representative know. See you in church.
God bless you. Rev. Jane+
